When heading away from home for an outdoor adventure, it’s important to be prepared for planned trip, but also in the event that things go wrong. The following list can be adapted based on the extend of the excursion planned and the potential hazards.

  1. Navigation
    • This can include a map, compass, altimeter, GPS device, personal locator beacon (PLB) or satellite messenger.
    • If planning for a short day hike on a well marked trail, all these items may not be necessary.
    • If relying on a smartphone for these tools, it’s important to consider durability and battery life.
    • How to Use a Compass blog post
  2. Illumination
    • A headlamp is a great choice for lighting because it’s hands-free.
  3. Sun protection
    • This includes sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat.
    • Sunglasses protect from both the sun itself and the reflection off of snow.
  4. First Aid Kit
    • Basic bandages and blister care are important.
    • Insect repellent may also be needed.
  5. Tools
    • A knife or multitool is a must-have on outdoor adventures, especially if a fire is needed.
    • Bring gear repair kits depending on your other supplies.
  6. Fire Starter
    • Bring a lighter or waterproof matches to ignite a fire.
    • Dry kindling in a bag, such as small, dry wood or drier lint, can be critical in starting an emergency fire.
  7. Emergency Shelter
    • An emergency shelter is one that is carried at all times. A tent at your campsite doesn’t count when you leave your campsite.
    • This can be a tarp, an emergency blanket, an emergency bivy, or even a large garbage bag. It will help protect you from the elements in the event of an emergency.
  8. Food
    • Always pack more food than you need. If going on a one-day adventure, pack food for an extra day. For a multi-day adventure, consider packing even more.
    • Choose foods that don’t need to be cooked and aren’t perishable, such as energy bars or trail mix.
  9. Water
    • The amount of water needed will depend on how long you’re going, how hot it is, and what level of activity you’ll be doing.
    • It’s a good idea to bring an option for treating water you find on your excursion in case you don’t pack enough. Water treatment tablets and water filters are easy to pack.
  10. Insulation
    • Weather can change quickly, especially overnight. Bring extra layers for warmth and waterproofing in case you end up being out overnight unexpectedly.

Bonus Item: Bear Spray

Where I live in Northern BC, bear spray is a common and essential item to bring on any activity that is out of the city area and people. Carry it in your hand or have it in a quickly accessible location.
