There are three distinct categories of teaching practices: Lively Teaching (group work, games, projects, movement, constructing knowledge socially), Academic Rigor (cognitively demanding tasks, high expectations with passionate investment in content), and Connective Instruction (helping students see the curriculum as something that matters to their current lives and their futures).
Pick one word problem and follow the below routine. Take about 2o minutes to build a deep understanding about a chosen word problem before individual work. The fun is in the students talking to each other about their thinking.
Flashcards and multiplication charts rely on memorization. Skipping counting also leads to memorization. Explicit stategy instuction outperforms drills and memorization. Research has shown this.

This book was covered in EDUC 397: Curriculum and Instruction in the Humanities. It provides in depth explanations of phonetics, phonology, orthography, morphology, syntax, semantics, and structured language and literacy instruction.
For EDUC 398, Curriculum & Instruction in Math and Science Using ADST, one of the requirements was to complete the first unit of the Math Minds online course.

I listened to this audio book before the start of my first practicum in order to have some tools for talking to kids. Although I’ve worked in schools for a few years, I don’t have kids of my own and I wanted to have more confidence and understanding when talking to little kids.
