Barriers to Culture Change:
Teacher training in sustainable development
The BEd program I took (and many colleagues took because it’s local) didn’t have any education for sustainable development included.
Classroom time and resources
Many teachers, including myself, are already busy and overwhelmed between all the preparing, marking, and teaching. Additionally, our school doesn’t have a collection of sustainable development resources.
School wide participation
A culture of sustainability is not something the school leaders are currently implementing. Without it being their initiative, gaining school wide participation will be a barrier.
Who will be involved?
Changing the school culture to one focused on sustainability will require to participation of teachers, support staff, administrators, and students. Ideally, parents and the surrounding community will become involved, too.

Professional Development Days
During the professional development days throughout the school year, workshops could be offered that help teachers gain knowledge and confidence to teach for sustainable development. This would also help teachers learn about the cross-curricular aspects of climate change.
Talk about it
As describing by Katharine Hayhoe, talking about climate change is one of the most important things we can do, especially when we start from the heart (Hayhoe). Finding out why it matters to a colleague and talking about it in a way that it matters to them personally will help give them a reason to teach about climate change. With their starting off point being relatable to them, they will already have background knowledge about it.
Collaboration
Not only is collective hope stronger than individual hope (Kelsey), but working together can save teachers time, stress, and brain power. Additionally, sharing lessons related to sustainable development will increase the likelihood of other teachers teaching it in their classrooms, too.
Curriculum Integration
Although curriculum integration wouldn’t reduce the need to either find or adjust resources, integrating sustainable development topics into subjects can save time because it stops climate change from being seen as an additional topic to cover. Instead, integration means “a holistic change in teaching and learning practices” (Hargreaves).
Plan a school-wide Earth Day activity
This could be a student-led plan that involves inviting other classes to participate. By having students lead and make the plan, they might be more invested because “top-down instructions …may cause a decrease in the willingness to act” (Cantell et al., p. 721).
Create climate change and sustainability related posters to display in the hallways and around the school
Having visuals with information for students and staff to see can be a way to get people thinking about the topic and the values related to sustainability that we hope for others to follow. As a culture of sustainability gains traction, the visuals will serve as a reminder of those values so we don’t lose sight of them (Cramer).
Who will be involved?
Improving the sustainability of facilities and operations will require the participation of students, staff, administration, and maintenance (for switching out lightbulbs).
Action Plan:
Reduce electricity usage
By encouraging students and staff to turn off lights and electronics that aren’t needed, the electricity usage of the school can be reduced. As stated in the Sustainable Schools Best Practice Guide, “lighting accounts for nearly half the electric bill in most schools” (BC Ministry of Education).
Starting in September, our class will initiate a school wide challenge to reduce electricity used. The incentive could be that part of the difference in the current year and previous year’s hydro bill will be put towards new playground equipment. Our class will request the previous year’s electricity used from the board office and present it to the school. We will also suggest ways to reduce electricity. Suggestions will include turning off the lights when not needed in classrooms and other areas that have adequate light from windows throughout the day. All students can take it upon themselves to turn off the lights when the class is leaving a space or suggest that the lights be turned off if there’s enough light coming through the window. This can also be done for computers not being used.
Additionally, lightbulbs should be switched out for more efficient, compact fluorescent light bulbs, such as the T-5 and T-8 fluorescent bulbs.
Encourage teachers to take learning outside the classroom
There is lots of space on the school grounds, especially on days when shade isn’t needed, and teaching and learning about sustainability and the environment is well suited for the outdoors. Outdoor activities could include talking to nearby community members, measuring biodiversity, and observing the natural and urban landscapes in the area (Gibb, p. 16). Taking learning outside utilizes the green spaces and reduces the energy requirement of the school as lights and computers can be left off.
Organize the school garden
There is a lot of potential for the school garden. Even though school is not in session in the summer, crops with short maturity lengths could be grown and used for the school breakfast and lunch programs. This could include radishes, lettuce, spinach, herbs, and berries that mature in the spring, such as early strawberries. By organizing who does what and what is planted where, students and staff could be more involved and reap the benefits together. Organizing could start as simple as a schedule and a map after finding out which classes wish to be involved. As stated in the Sustainable Schools Best Practices Guide, “involving students in ongoing school garden projects allows them to learn about the cycles of life and engage in fun outdoor learning” (BC Ministry of Education). The food harvested in the garden could be used for the food program.
Increase the sustainability of the food program
Biodegradable or reusable dinnerware
Currently, a large number of students eat at school for breakfast and/or lunch and everything is currently served on paper plates/bowls with plastic cutlery. It would reduce the schools waste substantially to switch to reusable or biodegradable options. There is only one food services staff member so the cleanup would need to include either other staff or students, and they would be pulled from classrooms. The food prep area is also very limited for the lunch and breakfast program. For this reason, switching to biodegradable options would be an easier, but still impactful, switch to make. Serving some meals that don’t require plates or cutlery is also a way that waste could be reduced.
Stop sending food waste to the landfill
Additionally, food waste that ends up in the landfill produces methane gas. As food decomposes in a landfill, due to the lack of oxygen, methane gas is released into the air, which is a lot worse than cardon dioxide (Team Compost Connect). Additionally, the transportation of food waste produces more carbon emissions. There are two ways to reduce these emissions.
The first is to encourage students to not waste food. If students took only what they knew they would eat, there would be less waste. Students in Ontario successfully reduced their school’s food waste by half in 2025 by informing other students. Check out the CBC Kids News article here for inspiration.
Compost food waste
The second way to prevent food from ending up in the landfill is by either starting a school composting program or sending food waste to the municipal compost program. Although composting still releases carbon dioxide, it’s a gas that’s less potent than methane and the finished compost is “a valuable soil enhancer that helps plants thrive” (Gibbens). This soil is also better for the Earth than commercial fertilizers. “Better soil helps support plant growth, which can help sequester carbon from the atmosphere. Stronger, nutrient-rich soil also reduces the need for fertilizer and pesticides, which are pollutants themselves and are often produced with destructive mining practices and a high carbon footprint” (Gibbens).
Serve less meat and dairy (or none)
Finally, to further increase the sustainability of the food program, less meat and diary should be served. In addition to meat and diary conflicting with some students dietary needs, “the meat and dairy industry is responsible for around 14.5% of global greenhouse gas emissions, as well as a major driver of biodiversity loss, so it’s an important sector to focus on” (Friends of the Earth, p. 8).
Who will be involved?
Working together as a school community to reduce carbon emissions will require the participation of teachers, support staff, administrators, students, and parents. Additional support will be needed from maintenance to arrange the planting of trees.
As a class and while encouraging other classes to participate, we will see how much we can reduce our carbon footprint of getting to school. Before and after school, the parking lot and side streets around the school are filled with vehicles picking up and dropping off students. Many students take a school bus and some already walk or bike, but a large portion of the students being dropped off either qualify to take a school bus or live within walking distance of the school. Additionally, students that live further away may have a friend near by and might be able to carpool.
Action Plan
Designate the parking lot as an idle-free zone.
By putting idle-free zone signs in the parking lot and encouraging parents to turn off their engines when they wait, less carbon emissions will be released when students are being dropped off and picked up. According to the Sustainable Schools Best Practices Guide, “idling a vehicle longer than 10 seconds uses more fuel and produces more emissions compared to restarting the engine” (BC Ministry of Education, p. 28). With this in mind, a very large about of carbon emissions can be reduced simply by turning off engines while waiting. To spread the word, the school could “put up posters outside the school, leaflets at pick-up and drop-off with the help of nominated eco-champions and ask students to take leaflets home” (Friends of the Earth, p. 4). The long-term benefits of an idle free zone could be immense.
Encourage teachers to take the city bus on field trips.
Not only is the bus already going along it’s route, but it’s also free for kids 12 and under in Terrace. That means before January, all grade 7 students can ride the bus for free. Once students turn 13, it’s only $1.75 to ride it and it’s $2 for adults. There’s a bus stop in front of the school grounds and another route stops along the side. Between these two routes, there are many different places the bus can be taken for a field trip for a “greener school trip” (Friends of the Earth, p. 5). Additionally, taking public transit as a class will give students the knowledge and confidence for them to do it on their own. If used to their maximum potential, “one city bus can take 40 vehicles off the road and save 70,000 L of fuel” (BC Ministry of Education, p. 27).

Organize a campaign for a GoByBike Week.
Encouraging students and staff to ride their bikes or walk to school to reduce the collective carbon emissions has the potential to be very impactful. As an example, seen in the Sustainable Schools Best Practices Guide, a school set a goal to get “90% of students walking to school on Wednesdays” and the result was “increased participation from 65% to almost 90% over a five-month period” (BC Ministry of Education, p. 4). Since “transportation contributes a full 45% of total household greenhouse gas emissions in BC” (BC Ministry of Education, p. 27), a successful GoByBike week, or similar campaign, can make a big impact on climate change. As stated on their website, the 2025 GoByBike weeks participation had an impact similar to “removing the annual emissions of about 600 typical passenger cars from the road for one year” (“GoByBike BC – Bike It. You’ll Love It.”).
Encourage eligible students to ride the bus
Emphasis will be placed on the positive effects of taking the school bus because the number of students that take the bus to school in BC each day removes “60,000 vehicles that would otherwise be on the road” (BC Ministry of Education). Including the positive effects of riding the bus increases the flexibility of this goal and, ideally, includes all students in collectively getting to school in a more sustainable way.
Plant more trees
There are many long-term benefits to planting more trees. By planting more trees closer to the building, when the trees get large enough, they will provide pockets of cooler areas for staff and students to spent time outside. This is especially important as our climate warms. As stated in the Sustainable Schools Best Practices Guide, “natural plantings of trees and shrubs can diminish air and noise pollution and assist in cooling classrooms” (BC Ministry of Education, p. 23). An additional reason is because “trees… remove the greenhouse gas carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, as well as being home to many species” (Friends of the Earth, p. 7). Trees and plants work as carbon sinks to offset the carbon emissions released from burning fossil fuels.
The below checklist has been created to regularly audit progress made in the above plan. By revisiting the checklist at least twice a year, it can be determined if progress has been achieved in improving the sustainability of the school and school community.
